The Obama administration’s handling of Syria reminds me of table tennis. Our eyes follow the ball as it bounces back and forth, across the net, from one side to the other. We’re never sure who will win, or even who are the good guys. Both sides work feverishly to keep the ball in the air so that it doesn’t land on the floor and score a point for the enemy. Who are the opponents? That is not always clear.
Certainly in the Syrian conflict President Assad would be an opponent. And, fighting beside him are the Russians. On the other side of the table are the United States and our new “best friends”, al-Qaida. Yes, war does make strange bedfellows.
The United States and al-Qaida have been enemies since 9/11, yet now that we have a common enemy Obama seems to think he can trust them. There is an old proverb that says, “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.” While that may be true to some degree, al-Qaida is nobody’s friend. They have one goal: world conquest. According to Wikipedia, al-Qaida is a “global militant Islamist organization founded by Osama bin Laden between 1988 and 1989. It operates as a multinational, stateless army and a radical Sunni Muslim movement calling for global Jihad and a strict interpretation of sharia law.”
These people are not our friends.
While al-Qaida still hungers for world dominion, our government has been helping them buy weapons and arms under the guise of fighting the Syrian government since early 2012. In March, theNew York Times reported, the [CIA] has helped Arab governments shop for weapons, and vet the rebel commanders and groups to decide who should get them.
Just a few days ago, Russia gave the Obama administration a list of the al-Qaida members among the Syrian rebels receiving U.S. supplied arms. The list proves the U.S. is failing to vet the rebels being supported by the West for ties to al-Qaida and other jihad groups. Did the CIA take their eyes off the ball? If they were vetting, who got the weapons, what happened? Did someone on Team Obama slip up?
Not only is al-Qaida our sworn enemy, but they have aligned themselves with other jihad groups who desire world domination. In a 20 minute video sent out to jihad website, Iraq’s Emir of al-Qaida, Al-Baghdadi acknowledged that al-Qaida has been fighting in Syria, and confirmed that the Jihadist group Nusra is an extension of al-Qaida in Iraq.
Why is this relevant in our table tennis game? The Obama administration admits that Jusra are terrorists, and they are on the terrorist watch list. Should Jusra receive arm shipments from the United States or any of our allies? Well, yes and no–at least in Obama’s rules of engagement, the answers can fool you. No, a reasonable person would automatically conclude that it is not a good idea to arm our enemies. Nevertheless, everything the Obama administration does aids our enemies.
Last week, Syrian President Assad, used sarin gas on his own people. The United States says they crossed Obama’s “red line”. Senators like John McCain, R-AZ, and Robert Menendez, D-NJ are becoming more hawkish in their response, demanding that we do something soon.
Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel told reporters that the Obama administration is rethinking its opposition to arming rebels opposed to the Syrian government. Did you get that? They are “rethinking their opposition to arming rebels opposed to the Syrian government.” Does that mean they are thinking about arming them less? Of course not–they want to give them deadlier weapons.
On Tuesday, senior administration officials told the Washington Post, “We’re clearly on an upward trajectory…We’ve moved over to assistance that has a direct military purpose.” The officials did not specify what U.S. equipment is under consideration, although the rebels have specifically requested antitank weapons and surface-to-air missiles.
So according to these senior officials, they are thinking about moving over to assistance that has adirect military purpose. In this case, I have one question. What about all those other things the CIA have been doing before now? Did that just “not happen” because Team Obama wants to pretend it didn’t? In early April, Middle Eastern security officials reported that the CIA has been helping Arab governments and Turkey secure and ship weapons to the Syrian rebels. For weeks, the U.S. has helped Syrian “rebels” get man-portable air-defense systems, or MANPADS, which are should-launched surface -to-air missiles used to down low-flying aircraft, like helicopters. I guess Team Obama considers MANPADS benevolent, or humanitarian aid. Especially if, they are “just now” getting ready to move over to assistance that has a direct military purpose.
If you carefully follow the ball as it flies back and forth across the net, you can see the sudden underhanded moves by the Obama administration. They have been arming the Syrian rebels for over a year, and were fully aware that al-Qaida is part of the Syrian rebels. Anyone in Washington with an Internet connection will know by now that the terrorist jihadist group Nusra has publicly merged with al-Qaida. This means that the United States has been arming al-Qaida and the terrorist group Nusra for quite some time. Now, they want to increase the numbers and the destructive force of weapons going to people who hate us more than they hate the Syrians.
In this case, the enemy of my enemy is not my friend–he is an even deadlier enemy who is being aided by everyone at the table. And now, after all the time spent watching the players, we discover that it’s a rigged game, and the American people are once again set up to lose. Isn’t it time to get a government that loves America and will play to win?
