On Thursday, in a wide-ranging speech on foreign policy and national security at the National Defense University in Washington, President Obama said that he would support what he termed democratic transitions in Islamic countries. He cited Libya, Tunisia, and Egypt as examples of democratic transitions that serve as a “rebuke” to terrorists. The only problem: all three countries are now in thrall to terrorists.
Extending that Orwellian reversal, President Obama said that supporting the rebellion in Syria – a rebellion in league with al Qaeda – would be a move forward for democracy. He suggested that Syria had to protect against the “tyranny of terrorism.”
Finally, he stated that foreign aid was the solution for burgeoning democracies, even though such foreign aid has been wildly unsuccessful. Obama said that foreign aid was “fundamental to our national security, and it’s fundamental to any sensible long-term strategy to battle extremism.”
